About The Course

INCEPTION

The Department of Psychology was established in the year 1999, as an undergraduate department.

OBJECTIVE

  • At the completion of this course, students will be able to acquire the fundamental knowledge of psychology and its applications, understand the intricacies of human development and behavior, appreciate the social dimension and cultural aspects of behavior and develop themselves personally and professionally.
  • Cultivate empathy and sensitivity towards psychological aspects in dealing with every day issues and gain theoretical and practical knowledge in emerging fields in psychology.

  • Students can opt to wok in hospitals, clinics, de-addiction centers, corporate companies, schools, special schools and therapy centers.
  • The Placement cell of the college offers 100% placement to all those who are interested in working after completion of the course.

FACILITIES

LABORATORY

  • The laboratory is equipped with high quality equipments such as Bhatia’s Battery of Performance Test of Intelligence, Raven’s Progressive Matrices, Tachistoscope, Mirror Drawing Apparatus to name a few.

LIBRARY

  • The department library has over 250 books and 400 project reports which are issued to students for reference.

ACTIVITIES

  • The Department organizes several activities outside the classroom to motivate students and encourages them to hone their skills. It also believes in exposing them to lectures from a variety of resource persons.

CERTIFICATE COURSE

  • The Department offers a 20-hour course on Child Psychology and Assessment for second year students

National Conference

  • The National Conference on "Parenthood in New Millennium" was held on 3rd January 2020. A total of 336 people from around 34 colleges in South India participated in the Conference. There were 7 resource persons from the field of Psychology. 53 scientific papers were presented in four sessions.



GUEST LECTURES

  • Sweatha Jayakumar, Student Counsellor, Primus School Dubai who is an alumnus of the department, gave a lecture on Prospects for Psychology Graduates Abroad. 
  •  Divya Krishnan, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Psychotherapist, Chennai gave a lecture on Recent Trends in Counselling and Psychotherapy in India
  • Dr.Nappinnai Seran, Marital Counsellor and Dr. Ardhanaari, Consultant Psychiatrist, Chennai gave lectures on Suicide Prevention. Competitions were conducted by PsyHub for the students of the Department of Psychology. Students actively participated in competitions such as short film making, meme creation, slogan writing and poster making. Prizes were distributed by PsyHub.
  • Orientation to  Indian Montessori Training  conducted by Ms.Shobhana Vaidyanathan –director, Montessori primary course , Indian Montessori training courses – Chennai-28.
  • Orientation on Career counselling   conducted by Dr. Mallika Nanda, Head –School Connect Program, College Dekho in collaboration with Rotary club of Madras North.

INDUSTRIAL VISITS AND COMMUNITY OUT REACH PROGRAMS

  • The second year students of the department visited the Old Age Home and Special School at Andhra Mahila Sabha .

  • The Department of Psychology in collaboration with Rotary Club of Madras North conducts career counseling for school students. Eighteen students from the department have volunteered for the same. The students are being trained by Dr. Malika Nanda, Head-School Connect Program, College Dekho.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

  • An MoU was signed between the Psychology departments of Dr. MGR-Janaki. College and Chevalier T Thomas Elizabeth College for Faculty Exchange program during the academic year 2019-20.

IN HOUSE MAGAZINE

  • The Department of Psychology released a magazine- IMPACT 2019-20 with articles, short stories, poems, drawings, cartoons and puzzles prepared by the students of the department.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

  • To increase the student’s involvement towards the subject events such as Dumb charades, Role Play, Quiz, Emotional Combination ,Case Study Presentation etc.,are conducted

INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMPETITION

Essay writing and poster making competitions were conducted were conducted for students of other departments.

INTERNSHIPS

  • Students interned in the following organizations: Sri Ramachandra Hospital, Cancer Institute, TTK Deaddiction Centre, VHS Hospital, Revamp Hospital, Andhra Mahila Sabha Hospital, Element H, MindZone etc.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Sri Kiruthika G (III BSc Psychology) presented a paper on Developing Environmental Awareness among Preschoolers at the Young Psychologist Competition held at Christ University Bangalore.
  • Pushpa Prasad from I BSc Psychology participated in poetry competition in MOP Vaishnava College  and won the Shresht Kavi Samman.
  • Gunjan Pandey, Poornima Lakshmi. B and Yogalakshmipriya won 2nd prize in media quiz during SRRISTHI 2019 held in Shasun Jain College .
  • Vishnupriya V.V won 1st place in group singing at CHAINIKA in Chevalier T Thomas Elizabeth College for Women
  • Sahana Sai Raghuraman of II BSc Psychology and Saranya G of III BSc Psychology won 2nd place in Quizophrenia in Science Fest by Shasun Jain College.
  • Sahana Sai Raghuraman and Kavya of II BSc Psychology won 2nd place in Acquizzed in PSYNERGY by Ethiraj college.
  • Sahana Sai Raghuraman won 1st place in Potpourri in Intercollegiate Cultural Fest by Shasun Jain College.
  • Thivya Lakshmi K from III BSc psychology won first prize in Art Attack at PSYFEST conducted by Shasun Jain College for Women
  • Saranya G from III BSc psychology won 2nd prize in debate competition and a cash award of Rs. 300 at Arora 2K 19 intercollegiate fest conducted by Madras Christian College.
  • Saranya G from 3rd  BSc psychology won first prize in potpourri , II prize in channel surfing and Adszapat Shreyas 2K19” conducted by Shasun Jain College for Women.
  • Hemalatha A (III BSc Psychology) won first prize in photography competition for HOPE  intercollegiate event held at JBAS College.
  • Angelin Shruthi from 1st BSc Psychology won 2nd prize in poem writing competition held in Stella Maris College by the Department of Psychology in connection with the International Conference of Victimology .

  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan conducted a National Workshop on Development of Self using Principles of Integral Psychology for the Post Graduate students of Department of Psychology, St. Mary’s College, Thrissur, Kerala on 19 August 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan delivered a Lecture on Interpersonal and Interpersonal Effectiveness at Government Engineering College, Thrissur, Kerala on 20 August, 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan delivered a Lecture on Psychological Impacts of Cancer at Cancer Awareness Summit organized by WE for the People at The Hilton Chennai on 4 October 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan delivered a Lecture on Developing Counselling Skills among Teachers for the Citizenship Training Camp of Dr. MGR Institute of Special Education and Research, Chennai held on 5 Oct 2019.
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan wrote an article on The Importance of Mental Health Awareness in the School Ecosystem: Alleviating Stigma through Mindfulness in Mentor International Magazine (Vol 13, Issue 5, pages 15-17)
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan participated and presented a paper on Applying Vygotsky’s Social Constructivist View in Educating the Differently Abled for the National Seminar on Sustainable Development of Students and Teachers through Constructivist Approach organized by Krishnasamy College of Education For Women, Puducherry held on 23 April 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan participated and presented a paper on The Role of Friendship in Development of Self-Regulation among Adolescents for the International Conference on Cognitive, Psychological and Behavioral Perspectives in Education in Alagappa University College of Education, Karaikudi held on 11 and 12 July 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan participated and presented a paper on Portrayal of the Ideal Woman in Indian Mythology: Implications on Current Social Mindset of Abuse for the National Seminar on Myths: Seeking Meaning in the Modern World in Dr. MGR-Janaki College for Women, Chennai held on 1 August 2019
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan participated and presented a paper on Need for Grit in Students with Hearing Loss in an Inclusive Setting for the National Seminar on Harnessing Challenges in Educational Research: Percepts and Prospects in Loyola College of Education, Chennai held on 8 and 9 November 2019.
  • Dr. Ragitha Radhakrishnan participated and presented a paper on Effectiveness of Probability Orientation Based Intervention for Enhancing Grit and Flourishing among Hearing Impaired Students at the 55th National and 24th International Conference of Indian Academy of Applied Psychology (IAAP)
