Dr. MGR–Janaki College was established in 1996 by Dr. Latha Rajendran as a tribute to the late Bharat Ratna Dr. M.G. Ramachandran, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and his esteemed wife, Mrs. Janaki Ramachandran. Guided by the visionary leadership of its Founder, the institution has evolved from modest beginnings into a premier centre of higher education, consistently producing academic rank holders across diverse disciplines.
The College commenced its journey with 70 students and 16 faculty members and has since grown exponentially. Today, it caters to over 4,000 students, offering 10 undergraduate programmes, 2 postgraduate programmes. It also proudly offers unique courses such as B.A. Performing Arts (Digital Media Integration) and M.A. Performing Arts—an interdisciplinary programme encompassing dance, music, theatre, yoga, history, and philosophy—distinctive as the only programme of its kind in Tamil Nadu.
At present, Dr. MGR–Janaki College functions as the Adyar campus of VISTAS (Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies), a Deemed-to-be University recognized as a Category I institution by the UGC and Accredited by NAAC with A++ . It is part of a vast educational network comprising 52 institutions across 34 campuses, with over 7,700 staff members and a vibrant student community exceeding 51,000 learners.
