INCEPTION

Post Graduate Department of Microbiology was instituted in the year 2004

OBJECTIVE

To ensure that students earning the M.Sc degree are able to complete a substantial research project related to microbiology, seek and employ insights from others in implementing the project, evaluate a significant challenge in the project in relation to core concepts, methods or assumptions in microbiology and capable of enriching practical skills through learning inside and outside the classroom.

LABORATORY FACILITIES

  • The strength of the department lies in the comprehensive laboratory utilizing advanced technologies and equipped processes
  • The department has well-furnished air-conditioned lab with Computer System, ELISA Reader, PCR, UV Spectrophotometer, UV Transilluminator, Soxhlet Apparatus, Phase Contrast Microscope& Dark Field Microscope etc
  • Our full-fledged laboratory facility aims to provide R&D activities & encourage “Academia – Industry” interaction. We have collaborated with Cavin care & Dr. JRK Pharma & Cline Rise Pharmaceuticals, Chennai to create scientific knowledge and obtain industrial data.
  • The department takes great pride in maintaining a well-developed animal house in accordance with the norms of CPCSEA, Animal Welfare Division, Government of India

SEMINARS, CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS

  • National webinar on “Diversified Fungi: Insights and Implications” was held on 01.02.2023. The resource persons were Dr. Thangam Menon, Emeritus Professor, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals,Dr. Bernard F. Rodrigues, Senior Professor, Botany Discipline, School of Biological & Biotechnology, Goa University, Goa,Dr. D. Prabhu, Assistant Professor and Head In-Charge, Department of Microbiology, Dr. ALM PG IBMS, University of Madras, Chennai and Dr.D. Arvind Prashanth, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Bio Sciences, Periyar University, Salem.
  • Workshop on “Ccp In The Production Of Condiments” was organised on 11.01.2023 & 12.01.2023 for PG microbiology students. The resource person was Mr.K.S.Sivashankar, Proprietor, Surya Food Products

GUEST LECTURES

  • Guest lecture on “Aerobiology-Recent trends” was held on 26.07.2022. Dr.N.K.Udaya Prakash, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Vels Institute of Science delivered the talk..
  • A guest lecture on “Food Fraudulence and Defence” was organised on 28.10.2022. The resource person was Mr.S.Krishnakumar, Cluster Hygiene Manager, Raffles Doha & Fairmont Doha, Qatar.
  • Guest lecture on “Research in Life Sciences Pathway to make Scientific Impact” was conducted on 19.01.2023. The resource person was Dr.M. Prakash, Associate Professor & Head Department of Microbiology, Kanchi Shri Krishna College of Arts and Science, Kilambi,Kancheepuram.
  • Guest lecture on “Bioremediation of Environmental Pollutants” was held on 08.02.2023. The resource person was Dr.Rajesh Banu, Associate Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Central University of TamilNadu,Tiruvarur.

ACADEMIA INDUSTRY CONNECT

The students visited the Sewage Treatment Plant in Koyembedu (120MLD) for a Field Work to get practical knowledge on primary and secondary sewage treatment processes.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Ms. Naadhiya Praveen from II MSc Microbiology presented a paper in seminar conducted by VELS Institute on 03.03.2023
  • Ms.D.JAYASHREE from II MSc Applied Microbiology was awarded “Women PG Student of the year award” conducted by Raj Power India Charity foundations on0 8.03.2023.
  • Ms.Yagniyashree and Ms.Yeshwandhini from II M.Sc won Second place in a competition on“ENTREPREDRE” organized by Department of Business Administration of our college.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Dr C.Banu Rekha, received “Fellowship award” FIAAM for the year 2021-2022 from Indian Association of Applied Microbiologist from Dr. N Chandrasekar, Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
  • Dr. C. Banu Rekha presented papers on “Production of Bio plastic from Banana Peel and Comparative Analysis of Degradation of Petroleum Based Plastic & Bio plastic using Aspergilus niger and Antibacterial Screening and Docking Study of Solanum trilobatum and Coleus amboinicus in the “18th International conference on Converging microbiological innovation for application in animal, plant, environmental and health care (ICCMIA -2023) 27.01.2023 & 28.01.2023.
  • Dr. C. Banu Rekha Judged the event “Heads up” in MICROFEST Association held on 21.01.2023 at Ethiraj College for Women, Chennai.
  • Ms S.Preethi, presented paper on “Effect of Zinger officinalae and Indica acalypa Extract on Phytopathogens of Arachis hypogeal-alternate Pest Management Strategy” in “18th International conference on Converging Microbiological Innovation for application in Animal, Plant, Environmental and Health care (ICCMIA -2023) 27.01.2023 & 28.01.2023.
