Dr. MGR - Janaki College was founded in the loving memory of the late Chief Minister Bharat Ratna Dr. MGR and his beloved wife Mrs. Janaki Ramachandran, who championed the cause of women's education, believing true empowerment of women can be obtained only through education and economic independence.

Now Dr. MGR Janaki college is a campus of Vels Institute of Science, Technology & Advanced Studies (VISTAS) – Deemed to be University & graded as Category 1 Institution by UGC and a part of 54 institutions, 34 campuses, 7700 staff members and 51000 students.
