About The Course

INCEPTION

  • The Department of English was established in 1996 and B.A English has been offered since 2004. The department is formally engaged in providing a holistic approach to life through language and communication, to the Undergraduates and Postgraduates who do foundation/Soft skill courses in English. B. A English is focused on enabling students to build an empathetic outlook through the study of literature.

OBJECTIVE

  • English Department provides a strong foundation in Literature and enables the students to have a deeper understanding of literary and cultural theories from World Literatures. The main focus is on British, American, Post-colonial literatures, Literary theories and also on the linguistic aspect of the language. 
  • The course emphasizes on the richness and diversity of the social and ethical values in literature and their response to those values. It also inculcates interest in students to learn the language and appreciate literature and develops confidence and competence in spoken and written expression.

DEPARTMENT LIBRARY AND LANGUAGE LAB

  • A well-stocked department library is available for the students and faculty. 
  • Language Lab has 30 computers and provides an opportunity to the students to improve their language skills. 

ACTIVITIES

Certificate course

  • The Department offers a 20 hour course on Report writing and Functional English for Second year students.

SEMINARS

  • National Seminar on Myth: Seeking Meaning in the Modern World was held on August 1, 2019.

GUEST LECTURES:

  • Dr. Vasu, Assistant Professor, A.M. Jain College delivered a lecture on “Guiding students to Attempt UGC NET/SET Examination” on March 2nd 2020.

NEWSLETTER:

  • English Department comes out with an annual Newsletter ‘MJC Musings” and a monthly newsletter, .PERIOD which presents the activities of the college.

ASSOCIATION - Parnassus

  • The literary association of the Department organises several clubs like Quiz, Drama, Debate, Book and Movie Club to hone the talents of the students.
  • It also conducts various competitions such as Creative Writing, Poetry Recitation, Pencil Sketching, Skit, Quiz and many more. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to take part in the competitions.

INTERNSHIP

  • Students intern at schools, and in publishing houses for 2 weeks after completing the second year.

FACULTY ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Ms. N. Shamini published an article “Remaking Identity in A. Revathi’s Truth about Me : A Hijra life Story” on National Conference on English Language and Literature held on 10th February 2020, at Bharath Institute of higher Education and Research. 
  • Dr. Santhilakshmi published an article ‘Impact of Technology on Film Industry and Dr. Lakshmi Balaji on the topic ‘Electronic Literature’. These were part of a collection of articles published by the College in a book titled Embracing the Digital Era. ISBN 978-93-81899-22-9

STUDENTS ACHIEVMENTS:

  • Ms. Nandhini. V of II BA English is the only cricketer from Dr.MGR Janaki College to be selected in the Tamil Nadu Senior State Level championship. She got selected by the TNCA on June 19th 2019 to play for Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. She participated in the National Tennis ball Cricket tournament held from September 13-16, 2019 at Ongole, Andhra Pradesh and won the tournament.
  • Ms. K.S. Gayathiri of III B.A. English won Third place in the Chess tournament held at M.O.P Vaishnav College for Women.
