NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The motto of NSS is “NOT ME, BUT YOU”. NSS aims to inculcate social welfare in students, and to provide service to society without bias. NSS volunteers work to ensure that everyone who is needy gets help to enhance their standard of living and lead a life of dignity.

OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the community in which they work
  • Development of social and civic responsibility
  • Acquire competence for group living and sharing responsibilities
  • Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
  • Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
  • Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters; and
  • Practice national integration

Kinds of Programs

There are two types of programmes. They are,

(a) Regular NSS programmes under which students undertake various activities in the college.

(b) Special programmes in which include a special camp of 7 days duration organized in the adopted village and activities are conducted with the involvement of the local people

REGULAR ACTIVITIES

  •  International yoga day celebration: Chief Guest was Mrs. Vanathi Srinivasan Journalist, Tamil Nadu
  • Tree plantation on campus.
  • Cleaning of the Adayar Poonga  and awareness demonstration on hazards of using  Plastic to the visitors of the Poonga.
  • Disaster relief management programme organized by Airport Authority of India, in which  Fire rescuing Methods and safety measures followed in Navy and Army to defend from terrorist attack were demonstrated.
  • College campus cleaning  and awareness among the student to “say NO to Plastic”. Segregation of waste was done and degradable waste was added to vermicompost pit maintained on campus.
  • Participated in Swatch Bharat movement and cleaned the Elliot’s Beach along with an NGO. 
  • Cancer Awareness Programme for the students by Dr.Sarojini Prahlad Radiologist . 
  • Session to create awareness on  cyber crime by Mr.Rakshit Tandon. 
  • NSS Volunteers participated in Feast on south Indian culture and traditions organized by State Tourism Department at Egmore Museum and our students  showcased Oyilattam, Karakatam, Mayilattam, Parai etc., 
  • Our students participated in the 150th NSS Day celebrations and Ms. Poornima of Psychology Department secured 1st place in Dance Competition. 
  • Organised the Navrathri Golu on campus
  • Students participated in State level NSS orientation Program held at Asan Memorial College. 
  • To mark the NSS Day several competitions were held  in our college.
  • Awareness on Organ Donation by  Rotarian Mrs. Radhika and  Dr. Geetha of Chettinad Hospital, Chennai .
  • Pongal celebration in  the college Campus.














SPECIAL CAMP

NSS Unit conducted a special camp at Maganyam and Azhagur of Kanchipuram District from 07.09.2019 to 13.09.2019.Activities conducted in the village are

  • Awareness on women empowerment, Drug abuse and Child labour through rally and a skit performance.
  • Physical and mind fitness sessions like yoga  and meditation followed by life skill training program given by Mrs.Devi Pandian, NGO coordinator of Bhumi foundation.
  • Rally on waste management and road safety, followed by training session on disaster management by Mr.Kalaimani, Sai disaster academy. 
  • Awareness on cancer, organ donation and communicable and non-communicable diseases among  high school students.
  • Vermicomposting, Mushroom cultivation training was given to the self-help group .
  • Rally on Digital India and Swatch Bharat.
  • Session on nutrition and hygiene by Ms.Durga, Nutritionist and Dietitian from IGNOU. Cancer awareness session by Ms.Mary from Pennalam.
  • Waste management session was conducted by Ms.Kavitha, from IIT, Madras. 
  • Medical camp which included eye  and dental checkup was conducted by IMA, Kanchipuram Branch
